As has been mentioned several times, article directories are among the most effective means to getting more traffic and a higher ranking for your site. Not only do they give your business more exposure, they also allow you to build backlinks that will help your site rank higher.

When it comes to link placement, most article directories only allow links to be placed on the resource box, the box that contains information about the author of the article, the website, and the business that the site represents. You must know, however, that there are also a few directories that will allow you to incorporate links inside the article body as long as these links are properly placed. You can take advantage of these in order to create more backlinks (other than those in the resource box).

So, what are the rules when it comes to incorporating backlinks in your article body? Well the truth is, there are no established rules that apply in all situations – different sites have different rules. There are, however, some general guidelines that will help you incorporate links in your articles successfully. The following is a list of what’s okay and what’s not when you’re faced with the task:

What’s Okay: The use of anchor text
What’s Not Okay: The use of a direct URL

If you are to incorporate backlinks inside your article body, be sure that they are placed as hyperlinks with anchor texts, not as direct URLs. This makes incorporation of the links smoother and easier to read among your readers – who wants to struggle with reading a complete URL, anyway, which may not even make sense? It would also help if you choose a keyword for each anchor text – the search engine will favor a link whose anchor text is a relevant search term.

What’s Okay: At least two links per article
What’s Not Okay: Too many links in the copy

Too many links are not good to look at. Plus, bombarding your article body with links will make the copy look spam – both the search engine and your readers will notice that. So, keep the number of links to a minimum. The general rule is to keep the links balanced with the length of your copy. After all, your main goal is to relay information, right? Backlinking is only secondary.

What’s Okay: Adding links in a relevant way
What’s Not Okay: Adding links with a selling pitch

Remember: you must make your links and anchor texts appear as smoothly as possible. They must become an inherent part of the copy once they’re in place, instead of appearing like they’re just haphazardly incorporated for the mere sake of having links inside the article. A selling pitch together with the links may get your article rejected in some article directories.

What’s Okay: Several related anchor texts
What’s Not Okay: A single anchor text for all of your links

After determining the number of links you’ll incorporate in the copy, it’s time you search for the right anchor texts. Choose a keyword and other related words – a different anchor text for each link. This will give variety to your article and will make the links appear more smoothly in the copy.

What’s Okay: Links pointing to several pages
What’s Not Okay: All links pointing to just one page

You’re given the chance to add backlinks to your copy, so don’t waste that chance by making all your links pointing to just one site. Instead, each link should point to a separate page in your site. This way, you’ll be able to optimize the use of the said links.

After considering the mentioned pointers, you’ll surely have an easy time creating copies with backlinks inside the body. But of course, you must know which directories to submit them to. IdeaMarketers (http://www.ideamarketers.com) and GoArticles (http://www.goarticles.com) are some of the directories that allow backlinks inside the body of the article, and of course the ABC plugin does! You can browse the internet to find more directories, and be sure that you familiarize yourself with the submission guidelines to ensure that all the articles you submit will be accepted.
